The Intermediate French Class

Beyond Bonjour: French Foundations Reboot

Debra’s Journey with the French Fluency Roadmap

As an intermediate learner of French, I highly recommend Dr. Nat’s French Fluency Roadmap. At first glance, I thought it was a simple tool to keep me ‘on track’ in my language learning journey but as I progressed, I found it to be a wonderful motivational tool -- one that made me really think about my overall goals and kept me accountable, to myself!

Using it every day, in a very short time I began to see accomplishments and milestones achieved, in a written form that made them feel “real”! Again, this provided further motivation to keep going, learn new things, attend classes, broaden my comfort-zone and stretch that *extra little bit* to master a concept that, until recently, had seemed impossible.

Breaking down goals into one-month chunks feels entirely achievable and it is!  I create my Blueprint as a simple document on my laptop, broken down by month, week and day, in which I track not only my formal French learning activities (like classes) but every little thing I do in French each day --  time spent listening to French radio, online vocabulary games played, TV programs and movies watched, the study of particular grammar points, YouTube segments in French, words added to a vocabulary list which eventually become flashcards, emails written in French, podcasts enjoyed while driving, French novels read, etc.

I feel it’s important to draw on a wide variety of resources but certainly, it’s not possible to do ALL these things every day -- but that’s the key – the French Fluency Roadmap allows you the flexiblity to do the things that you enjoy but demands a commitment of time to make your goals a reality. The specific goal you set will change from month to month, and success will be easily measured by how easy (or even effortless) the challenge has become. If you’re still struggling (as I often do) I just add the same goal again for another week or month of study.

There is no escaping the fact that it takes time and dedication. In my case, I have committed to a minimum of two hours of French per day, which will continue. Two hours may seem like a lot but think about it – how much time do you spend watching less-than-exhilarating TV? Could you listen to French radio during your daily commute? Could you listen to a podcast while doing household chores? The thing is, it’s not important to understand every word! Just being immersed in the language is incredibly valuable, in my opinion.

When using the French Fluency Roadmap, I feel a sense of satisfaction at the end of each month when I look back over all the topics I’ve covered, exposure to new French vocabulary, concepts and culture. Although I know I have a long road ahead, I believe that the French Fluency Roadmap will continue to help me navigate this exciting journey and I’m grateful to Dr. Nat for having created the Elevate French Program and this indispensable resource. L'aventure se poursuivra tant que je continuerai à avancer!
